glitch art: liquid light lab
This video is an example of glitch art, created by "Liquid Light Lab." What I found interesting about this particular video was both the unique patterns and discolorations created in the video and the audio that the artist chose to pair this imagery with: recordings of electromagnetic activity near the planet Saturn. Using this audio adds an element of realism into this glitched footage, which, for me, provided a surreal viewing experience because it was disconcerting to listen to this audio while simultaneously watching the glitch art. Artistically, the film maker uses the elements of color and texture, coupled with a sense of pattern and rhythm to create something unique out of glitched imagery and space recordings. Before viewing videos like this, my only experience with glitch art was the accidental kind associated with my television or my computer glitching, and this video has opened my perspective on the idea of glitches.

performance art: a dandypunk
This experimental video was created by "A Dandypunk," dabbling in the technique of performance art. Out of all of the pieces I looked at, this was my absolute favorite because of its unique production and high quality. What resonated with me was the performer’s combination of dance and special effects to go along with it, providing a fantastical undertone to the piece. The performer also dances in step with the background music, which works to unify each aspect of the video. Not only that, but when I was younger, I used to watch talent shows like “America’s Got Talent,” and A Dandypunk’s video reminded me of some of the awesome performances I had watched on that show that deal with performance art like this. The elements of shape and space coupled with the principles of emphasis and movement further increase the quality and professionalism of this experimental video, which I found to be stunning.

This video, created by Sonia Falcone, focuses in on the technique of sound design. What struck me about this particular video was the emphasis on the music and how it affects everything else in the video, which is why I chose to include it here. The elements of color, line, and shape shift and change with the background music, emphasizing rhythm and movement with each note played. I connected with the video because to me it personifies the way I move and dance when listening to music when I’m out with my friends or attending a concert and condenses it into color and rhythm that creates a unique sound design.

The Chase: Syafiq latiff
This video, a wonderful example of montaging, was another one of my favorites because of the mounting suspense it engenders while viewing. What truly works to hit this feeling home was the emotional background music added to the piece, creating a sense of urgency which coincides perfectly with the title, “The Chase.” In addition to the music, the principles of movement as the performer is running and the unity throughout the piece created by the motif of time add to this sensation of urgency, making the artist’s message very clear. I was able to connect with the piece because of its employment of the motif of time, a concept I deal with every day. As a runner, I am constantly checking my time, constantly racing against time itself, and to see that idea present in this video created a unique connection with me personally.

Fakrul Zainuddin: film and montage This particular experimental video, an example of film and montaging, was different from the other videos I chose in that the overall meaning of the video is not as explicit because the film is a little weirder, which was why I chose it. In the video, there is a small, weak cat laying down, and odd beeping sounds are being played whenever it moves its mouth around, which was an interesting utilization of sound. Later, we see the cat much bigger, healthier, “Reborn.” This meaning was hard to grasp at first, but as I watched it, I was able to make this realization. The artist formulates this meaning through contrasting imagery of the small cat and the big cat, as well as an emphasis on color when showing the difference between the small, weak cat versus when it is “Reborn.” I connected with the piece because I find the message very inspiring. The idea that we can remake ourselves, and we can thrive from pain is a concept I like, having experienced a couple of serious injuries playing soccer over the years.

Awake: Rubben Von Gutti
I chose to include this video, an example of montaging, because of the artist’s unique interpretation of what it means to be “Awake.” The artist utilizes rhythm and movement, coupled with color and contrast between each clip, to personify and liven objects and places that most people would never view as being “Awake.” I also liked that the music was a little more subtle, a little more subdued, because the objects and places being depicted are subtle themselves. In viewing this video, I was able to make a connection between the meaning behind this video and the way I write creative pieces for English class (or for myself). As a writer, I like to find subtle ways to liven up various parts of my writings in order to enhance meaning, which is what this video works to do, as well.
